Since AIL Sound Walls were put on the City of Calgary’s Approved Products list in June of 2018, we have been working with the City to get a pilot project “in the ground” so they could see how it would perform in local conditions such as extreme weather fluctuations, salt spray from roadways, UV performance and graffiti removal.
The City chose one of their busiest roadways, Crowchild Trail, for the pilot. They also wanted the aesthetics of this wall to blend into the surrounding infrastructure and other noise walls in the area. They settled on our Tuf-Barrier (Reflective) product with our newer Green Teak colour with wood grain texture. This was complemented with Adobe-coloured post covers/caps and top/bottom panels to make a very smart first impression.
Two previous concrete noise wall iterations designed to reduce traffic noise on site
There had been two previous concrete sound walls on this alignment, which created challenges to get the new foundations on a proper spacing without running into conflict with their old foundations, which remained in the ground. The flexibility of our lightweight PVC system, with its variable panel lengths and smaller foundations, helped the contractor navigate through this with relative ease.
With AIL Sound Walls’ impressive list of performance attributes, we are confident that our pilot project will perform well on Crowchild Trail and, hopefully, there will be more of our systems popping up in Calgary as they have been in other cities throughout Canada and the US.
