A 288′ run of 15′ tall AIL Sound Walls was recently installed along the I-64’s Hampton Roads Express Lanes near Norfolk, VA. This project represents our first sound wall installation for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), marking a major step into this market. It also showcases our lightweight PVC system’s suitability for structure-mounted transportation applications and sets a precedent for future projects like this under VDOT specifications.

As a first-time VDOT installation, the project required close coordination between multiple stakeholders, with new approval processes, submittals and field alignment details to manage under tight schedules. The project team navigated these challenges while maintaining high communication standards and a collaborative problem-solving approach — all under strict VDOT oversight.
Project success came through proactive communication, flexibility and teamwork
AIL Sound Walls collaborated closely with the contractor, Allan Myers, and VDOT to review installation tolerances, resolve minor alignment adjustments in the field and maintain a smooth approval process. Our engineering and technical teams provided quick support and clear documentation to keep the project on track and compliant with VDOT expectations.
As the installation was nearing completion, we met on-site with Alan Myers’ project manager who spoke highly of his experience with AIL Sound Walls, noting that our panels were much easier to install than systems he’d worked with previously. The discussion reinforced a shared commitment to quality, strengthened the working relationship and helped resolve remaining field details efficiently — momentum that’s now carrying forward into our next VDOT project with them.

Our Silent Protector (Absorptive) system provided the required acoustic performance and structural durability for a complex transportation corridor with limited right-of-way working space. The project used matching enamel painted posts and tied in with existing sound barrier walls.
