This project for the city of Calgary replaced an older deteriorated concrete noise barrier wall with a lightweight PVC system from AIL Sound Walls and showcased the amazing versatility of our product. The 281 m run of Tuf-Barrier (Reflective) sound barrier walls was able to:
- Flange-mount into existing foundations in some locations
- Use direct-bury footings in other locations
- Tie into a newer concrete sound wall at one end
- And fit under a pedestrian bridge ramp in incremental steps

We worked closely with the city and the contractor, T.A.H.M. Enterprises, to keep the lines of communication strong, and provided information on our various mounting and footing configurations. This included multiple site meetings with the city to finalize the layout and location of the wall sections. One of the challenges we faced was that the older concrete walls dated back to 1986 and there were limited engineering records available on their foundations.
This was AIL Sound Walls second installation on Crowchild Trail
However, with the help of our project partners and our in-house engineering team, we were able to overcome this, and the project was considered a success. The client told us that it was very easy to install and they were happy with the process.

This is the second run of AIL Sound Walls along this major arterial roadway. In 2019, we worked with the city and T.A.H.M. again to install a 115 m run of Tuf-Barrier as a pilot project on Crowchild Trail SW to see how it would perform in local conditions such as extreme weather fluctuations, salt spray, UV performance and graffiti removal.
